Due to the difficult geographical conditions of Uttarakhand, it is a prone area for various types of disasters. Over the years, there have been disasters like Malpa landslides, cloud bursts in Tehri and Rudraprayag districts as well as earthquakes in Uttarkashi and Chamoli. It is quite clear that techniques related to mountaineering can make a special contribution in disaster management.

On the basis of these facts and experiences, the club has tried to focus its activities of more than 56 years in the field of mountaineering towards disaster management as well, due to which, through the Search and Rescue course, the goal has been set to develop the capacity of village folk and relief workers for relief and rescue during natural disasters and for search in the accident affected area.

By using mountaineering techniques, relief workers and the villager folk from the areas near the disaster-affected area will be able to reach the accident site quickly in less time and provide first aid. It is noteworthy that this training program was the first of its kind proposed by the club in the state of Uttarakhand. One measure of the regard commanded by the club is that the Uttarakhand Government gave the Club the responsibility of organizing 20 day Search and Rescue courses for Police personnel and other Government employees. A total number of 980 participants have received training under this scheme.

The club has developed three types of courses for disaster management based on mountaineering techniques. The two-day primary training will be especially useful from the point of view of making the village folk self-reliant for disaster management at their village. Whereas for the relief workers, which include the personnel of police, paramilitary forces, army and other related government departments, in addition to this two-day primary training, seven days of secondary training and 14 days of special training will be helpful in their skill and capacity development and will be able to make disaster management quick and effective.

The Nainital Mountaineering Club (NTMC) is committed to promote mountaineering techniques in the management of natural disasters and post disaster relief and rescue operations in Uttarakhand. In this regard, the club organizes two and seven day training programs in the school/village/ development block district level and the 14 day special training course is organized at the club’s headquarters in Nainital.

Two Days Primary Training

The main objective of this training is to give information about those mountaineering techniques to the village folk and grassroot level relief workers which are useful in primary disaster management. By organizing such programs at the village level, it will be possible to develop the capacity of the village folk and relief workers on topics related to disaster message (SOS)dispatch, search and rescue of people trapped in disaster or accidents, making stretcher from rope and wooden pole etc., and first aid.

Seven Days Secondary Training

This training, which is especially useful for relief workers, will make the participants aware of the concept of Search and Rescue, disaster message SOS Calls, different types of bandages and methods of artificial respiration, carrying hand stretcher, and rock-climbing techniques, etc. After receiving the training, the participants will be able to conduct a search and rescue the people trapped in the accident during disasters in a quick and effective manner.

Fourteen Days Special Training

In this special training the participants will be made aware about concept of Search and Rescue Operation, new rescue methods and types of medical first aid/treatment in detail, so that they can transport the injured from a height to bottom and from bottom to top, in crossing rivers and streams in minimum time  individually and in a group and it also includes establishing contact among relief personnel and exchanging information and methods of reaching the incident spot safely like rappelling, river crossing, training to establish contact through radio sets and systematic and effective use of relief equipment.

To avail the benefits of all three categories of training depending upon the number of participants and the training venue, and for further information and training fee, etc, contact The Nainital Mountaineering Club.
